Gigantic: Rampage Edition Revives The Indie MOBA After Five Years Away

After being released in 2017 by Motiga and only lasting a year before the servers were turned off, a cult favorite MOBA is returning with new devs and new ideas. Gearbox Publishing and Abstraction Games have announced Gigantic: Rampage Edition, which will launch April 9 for consoles and PC.

Gigantic: Rampage Edition will retain the five-on-five multiplayer online battle arena gameplay of its original release, as well as all of the content from that first go-round. However, this new Rampage Edition makes some key changes that the developers hope will keep history from repeating itself.

First and foremost, Gigantic will not be a free-to-play experience this time around, instead launching as a premium release for $20. The game will receive free updates post-launch, which include a ranked mode and new hero skins.

The original game’s main game mode, Clash, will make a return, and it will offer the same strategic 5v5 gameplay as before. A new game mode, Rush, will also be available at launch, which condenses the original Clash experience into fast and frenetic 10-minute matches.

All 23 characters will return from the previous game, and they’ll be joined by two new faces: The warrior with a gun for an arm Roland and agile feline Kajir will both be part of Rampage Edition’s initial roster. Every character can now be customized to the player’s liking via the new progression features, with hero/weapon skins and ability loadouts among the customizable options.

Each map from the previous game will also return, along with two new arenas built for both long Clashes and quick Rush matches. Picaro Bay is a sprawling marina with a massive pirate ship on one side for players to fight on, while Heaven’s Ward’s industrial-themed map features multiple buildings–warehouses, factories, and even a power plant–for players to use to their advantage.

Gigantic originally launched in July 2017 for consoles and PC, three years after it was originally announced. The game was in active development until January 2018, when then-developer Motiga announced no new content would be released and that the servers would be turned off–which then occurred on July 31, 2018.

Gigantic: Rampage Edition launches April 9 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC for $19.99. The game will offer crossplay across all platforms at launch.
